MODE is an Australian architecture and urban design firm. Founded in Brisbane in 1991, the company operates nine studios across Australia and New Zealand, employing around 170 staff.
The firm's notable regional projects include the Charles Darwin University DANALA precinct in Darwin,[1] the Broadbeach Cultural Centre on the Gold Coast,[2] and the Julia Reserve Youth and Community Centre in New South Wales.[3]
History
[edit ]Rhonan O’Brien established the practice in Brisbane in 1991 under the name Rhonan O’Brien Architects & Designers Pty Ltd. The company restructured in 2005, changing its name to MODE Design Corp and opening a second office in Sydney.
Between 2006 and 2012, the firm expanded through regional office openings on the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast, alongside strategic business acquisitions. MODE acquired Darwin-based firm The Architects Studio in 2008,[4] followed by Brisbane practice Codd Stenders Architects in 2010.[5] New studios were also established in Melbourne (2010) and Perth (2012).
The company went international in 2013 by opening an office in Auckland, New Zealand, and shortened its trading name to MODE in 2014. A temporary studio operated in Vietnam from 2015 until its closure in 2020. In 2021, the publication Building Design listed MODE in its World Architecture 100 compendium of the world's largest design practices.[6] The firm expanded its New Zealand operations in 2026 with a new studio in Christchurch.
