  • Comment: The El Pais only has a passing mention. Except for Die Presse, most other references do not meet basic criteria. Superboilles (talk) 07:12, 19 July 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment: WP:CORP not met. Further, since the editor is affiliated with the company, they need to do proper disclosure of this. Sulfurboy (talk) 06:17, 13 July 2026 (UTC)

FREETOUR.com is an online platform for free walking tours, budget tours and other local travel experiences. It has been described in press coverage and tourism-sector literature as one of several online intermediaries in the free walking tour market, connecting travellers with local guides and tour providers alongside platforms such as GuruWalk.

History

[edit ]

FREETOUR.com was launched in 2014 by the Dublin-based group HostelCulture, according to the Spanish newspaper El País, which reported in 2018 that the platform served 350 cities at the time.[1] In a 2018 feature on the growth of "free tours" in Austria, the Austrian newspaper Die Presse reported that Freetour.com had been the first platform to consolidate scattered free-tour listings into a standardised overview spanning hundreds of cities, and that its early lead was being challenged by the newer Spanish start-up GuruWalk.[2]

Platform model

[edit ]

Freetour.com operates on a pay what you want basis: travellers can browse and book walking tours, themed tours and day trips at no fixed upfront cost and pay guides on a voluntary basis after the experience, alongside a separate range of fixed-price budget tours.[3] Die Presse reported in 2018 that Freetour.com, in turn, charged guides a fee of 0ドル.20 per booking.[2]

The free walking tour model, of which Freetour.com is one example alongside GuruWalk, has also been discussed in tourism-law literature in relation to regulatory debates over guiding services in Spain.[4]

Corporate information

[edit ]

FREETOUR.com is operated by Freetour.com GmbH, a company headquartered in Zug, Switzerland.[5] Ignacio Merino Romero was appointed chief executive officer of the company in July 2025.[6]

Mobile applications

[edit ]

FREETOUR.com operates mobile applications, including a traveller-facing app for discovering and booking tours and Freetour.Guide, an app for providers and partners.[7]
