Blessed Ministry Community Church (BMCC; Chinese: 基恩之家) is a Protestant church in Hong Kong that ministers to sexual and gender minorities. It was established in 1992, having grown out of the religious group of the gay-rights organization Ten Percent Club (十分一會).[1] [2] The church has been described as the first Protestant congregation in Hong Kong founded by gay people and as Asia's first formally registered LGBTQ Christian body.[3] It has around 80 members, most of them sexual minorities, and is among the few Hong Kong churches led by openly LGBTQ clergy.[4] [5]
History
[edit ]The church was first known as the Blessed Minority Christian Fellowship, a name still in use in 2013.[3] [6] Its beginnings lay in the religious sub-group of the Ten Percent Club, a gay-rights organization; in 1992, a number of gay Christians built that sub-group into a congregation of their own.[1] [2] For roughly its first decade, the church employed no full-time pastor and depended on the work of lay volunteers.[3] Its first ordained minister was Selina Sun (辛淑雯), who had trained at the Lutheran Theological Seminary.[3] [7]
Public engagement and advocacy
[edit ]- In 1998, the church was one of six Christian groups that issued a statement supporting government-funded public education on equal opportunities relating to sexual orientation.[2]
- During the 2000s debate over anti-discrimination legislation, the church publicly supported a proposed sexual orientation discrimination ordinance.[2]
- In 2013, the church's then-minister, Silas Wong Kwok-yiu (黃國堯), spoke at Tamar Park in support of better legal treatment of gay people, on the same day as a large "Inclusive Love Praying Concert" opposing anti-discrimination legislation; the openly gay legislator Raymond Chan Chi-chuen also took part.[2] [6]
- In January 2025, a church minister took part in a press conference at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, presenting research on stable same-sex relationships; the study reported that about 70% of surveyed respondents in stable relationships intended to marry their same-sex partner.[8]
- In May 2025, the church took part in an IDAHOBIT event organized by the NGO Gay Harmony, running a street booth; its representative said such events gave LGBTQ groups a rare chance to engage the wider public.[9]
- In July 2025, the church responded publicly to the government's proposed framework for recognizing same-sex partnerships. Its response was reported by the South China Morning Post ,[10] Initium Media ,[11] Radio France Internationale,[12] and Christian Times (時代論壇).[13]
Organisation
[edit ]The church's ministries include a social justice ministry[9] . The church was run largely by lay volunteers rather than salaried staff.[3]
Theological position
[edit ]The church affirms same-sex relationships.[4] [5] In a foreword to the church's 2020 history, the theologian Kung Lap-yan (龔立人) characterized BMCC as emphasizing "a pure gospel before a pure church," an outlook he connected to the Lutheran formation of its first minister.[3]
