Anui Sainyiu (IPA: /ə̀.nwì sáɪ̇.ɲù/; Burmese: အီနွေဆိုင်းညူ; also known as ANUI, U Anui, ဦးအီနွေ, and Dr. Anui Sainyiu; born 28 July 1983) is a Naga indigenous scholar and politician. His work focuses on the documentation and preservation of indigenous language and culture. He founded the Lahe Academy in 2020 and has collaborated with international organizations working on endangered languages, including the Foundation for Endangered Languages and the Endangered Languages Project.[1]

Sainyiu has published research on indigenous education, endangered languages, ethnobiology, and Naga society. He is also the compiler of language learning materials and lexicographical works for the Lainong language.[2] [3]

Early life and education

Anui Sainyiu was born on 28 July 1983 in Lahe, Sagaing Region, Myanmar. His name is found various document differently so that clarified in the state own media according to the state regulations.[4]

He received a Bachelor of Arts in History from Mandalay University in 2014. He subsequently studied at Mahidol University in Thailand, where he earned a Master of Education in 2017 and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Multicultural Studies in 2021.[5]

Career

Sainyiu has worked on the documentation and preservation of the Lainong language, an endangered Northern Naga language spoken primarily in northwestern Myanmar.[6] Sainyiu's work has focused on the documentation, preservation, and revitalization of the Lainong language, a Northern Naga language spoken primarily in Lahe Township, Sagaing Region, Myanmar. His activities have included the development of orthographic conventions, literacy materials, dictionaries, and educational resources intended for community use.[7] As a native Lainong speaker and language consultant who contributed to linguistic fieldwork on Lainong, he assisted in the preparation of a language guide, revised lexical materials based on earlier linguistic work, and collaborated with linguists including Stephen Morey in documenting the language.[8]

Research

Sainyiu's academic work spans indigenous education, endangered language documentation, ethnobiology, literacy, and cultural studies.

In 2021 he published research in the Austrian Journal of South-East Asian Studies examining educational issues in Myanmar and indigenous communities.[2]

His research found that the Lainong language is endangered since most young people do not speak Lainong at home and use incomplete sentences in conversation.[9] And the recent study about bird knowledge showed that the language of Lainong could be maintain in remote areas where there is traditional knowledge is alive.[10]

Political activities

Outside academia, Sainyiu has written and spoken on issues relating to Naga society, border affairs, indigenous governance, and constitutional development.

He contested the 2020 Myanmar general election as a candidate of the Naga National Party for a seat representing the Naga Self-Administered Zone in the Amyotha Hluttaw (House of Nationalities).[11] [11] [11]

In subsequent years he published opinion essays discussing Naga constitutional development, indigenous governance, and political institutions in The Morung Express.[12]
