Animal Company is a virtual reality action video game developed and published by Wooster Games on July 3, 2024.
Gameplay
[edit ]In Animal Company, players navigate a series of theme environments, including sewers, forests, and caves.[1] using a physics-based "arm-swiping" locomotion system similar to Gorilla Tag .[2] Animal Company's Arena Mode gives each team a base to defend, inspired by Hypixel's Bedwars.[3]
Development
[edit ]Animal Company began as a six-week prototype before expanding into a full release. According to the developers, the game's design was influenced by the observed behaviors within younger VR player communities, noting considerations around how easily gameplay moments could be shared through short-form content influenced the early design decisions.[4] The studio has also reported adopting a community-oriented development model, relying on player feedback, in-game events, and user-generated content rather than traditional marketing.[4]
The game takes the locomotive mechanics of Gorilla Tag and combines it with the co-op tension of Lethal Company .[2] [5] [1] The studio took inspiration from other viral multiplayer hits like Gorilla Tag, Yeeps: Hide and Seek, and Among Us VR, also influenced by trends in games like Lethal Company and Content Warning.[1] In May 2025, the game got an update that added PvP Shooter into the game called Arena Mode.[3]
Reception
[edit ]Writing for UploadVR, Henry Stockdale stated that Animal Company was ranked as the "5th highest grossing game for the first year revenue on Quest, reaching 500k daily and 1 million active monthly players."[6] Scott Hayden of Road to VR mentioned how Animal Company was one of the only virtual reality games to garner over 100,000 user reviews on Quest.[2] Hayden also stated that Animal Company amassed over 1 million monthly users, passing Gorilla Tag.[1] [7] The game also being a top-earning game on Quest.[8]
The game was selected as a winner for the Best Early Access game in the VRDB Awards 2024.[9] The game was named one of Lightspeed Venture Partner's Game Changers in 2026.[10]
