1021 is the debut studio album by British-Canadian singer Rochelle Jordan. It was released on November 14, 2014, through Protostar. The album features production from KLSH, Dirk Pate, Slikk Muzik, Rich Kidd, Chase N. Cashe, Illangelo, Jay Anthony, Plus J, Eric Seats and Omega.
Release and background
[edit ]1021 was released in November 2014. Bandcamp lists the album under the stylized title 1 0 2 1, with the album's track listing and a 10th anniversary vinyl edition.[1] Apple Music lists the album as an R&B/Soul release issued under Rochelle Jordan / Empire.[2]
In a 2014 interview with Vice , writer Kyle Kramer described Jordan's music as bringing together house influences from her UK birthplace, Toronto R&B, the influence of artists such as Missy Elliott and Amerie, and Jordan's Jamaican roots. The article also described producer KLSH as Jordan's ongoing creative partner.[3]
In a 2015 interview with YouKnowIGotSoul, Jordan said the album title referred to her birthday number and that the songs were developed over two years while she was living in Los Angeles.[4]
Critical reception
[edit ]Michael J. Warren of Exclaim! gave the album a score of 8 out of 10, writing that Jordan's vocals, writing and performance showed confidence. Warren also described KLSH as the album's primary producer and praised the pairing between Jordan's vocals and KLSH's production.[5]
Twisted Soul named 1021 its album of the week, writing that the album was "a more than impressive offering" and highlighting songs including "Follow Me", "Good One", "401", "What the Fuss", "Ease Your Mind" and "Lowkey".[6]
Legacy
[edit ]In a 2021 interview with Paper, Jordan discussed the period after 1021, describing the years before Play with the Changes as a difficult creative and personal transition.[7] In a 2021 review of Play with the Changes, Exclaim! described Jordan and KLSH as primary collaborators in the period following 1021.[8] In 2026, The FADER included "Lowkey" in a guide to Jordan's best songs, describing it as a romantic slow burn from her 2014 album 1021.[9]
