CRU Group is a privately owned business intelligence company. The company focuses on the global mining, metals and fertilizers markets. It provides consultancy, market analysis, business analysis, news, data and conferences services.[1] They are also a price reporting agency.[2]

CRU employs over 420 people from a range of disciplines: economists, management consultants, engineers, metallurgists, geologists, chemists and journalists.
The company was originally named Commodities Research Unit. It was changed to CRU as the company expanded their offering to include more than just research products.

- 2012 – Ryan's Notes with the acquisition of Nonferrous Notes Organization

Partnerships

They work with Fitch Ratings on carbon emissions data.[5]
History
[edit ]In 1969, the corporation was founded by John Horam [6] alongside Robert Perlman.[7] Sir Sigmund Sternberg was chairman of CRU Holdings in 1983.[8]
In 2018, the Steel Market Update newsletter and conference product was acquired.[9]
In 2019 David Trafford became the CEO.[10]

[edit ]CRU Group sells a variety of products including newsletters, consulting reports, and prices as a price reporting agency.
Price reporting agency
[edit ]In 2013, its price reporting was audited by a big 4 accounting firm; these prices were cited being the "most widely used carbon steel indices in the world" at the time.[11]
In 2020, their price reporting was audited by BDO LLP.[12]
In 2025, they were cited as the publisher of the "leading US hot-rolled coil index".[2]
Publications
[edit ]In 2024, CRU Group acquired Fertilizer International, Nitrogen+Syngas, and Sulphur publications from BCInsight; CRU Group already owned corresponding conferences associated with these.[13]
Fertilizer International was first published in 1969, with predecessors including Phosphorus and Potassium by CRU Group subsidiary British Sulphur beginning in 1962.[14] : 4
Competition
