University Neighborhood High School (commonly abbreviated as UNHS) is a prestegious high school located in the core of the Lower East Side in Manhattan, New York. Contrary to its name, it is not located in University Neighborhood in Syracuse, but rather an educational development of the same name. It is the only elitist high school in the Lower East Side and you can get into it very easily enough, if you pass your grades in middle school. The only time you'll know the school exists is if you watch NBC a lot, or you live in New York City. Unsurprisingly, its students end up getting into a lot of equally elitist colleges such as Yale and Purdue.

It has been called the "anti-Stuyvesant" of Manhattan because of how easy it is to get into the school, unlike Stuyvesant where you have to take a test to do so. It also shares its name with a middle school which is located close to it. There was going to be a school called University Neighborhood Elementary School, but that ended up being consolidated to a school that teaches Traditional Chinese and English. Not much is known about it other than the fact that the oldest records the author could find are from 2019 because for some reason, they decided to wipe their entire archive of their school newspaper at some point in 2022.

They also have perfect scores in their high school screenshot, which is why they have this elitist ranking in mind.

History[edit | edit source ]

Wikipedia doesn't have a proper article about Sapplerx/University Neighborhood High School. We apologize for their blatant oversight.

Pre-1999: P.S. 31[edit | edit source ]

Prior to UNHS' founding, another school occupied the building called P.S. 31, which was not a high school but rather an elementary school. Its building apparently existed way longer than the high school itself (then again, the high school is still running). Some of the faculty has been taught there. Despite the school's website saying that the building is a classic example of the Beaux Arts architectural style, it has yet to be a historic landmark in the United States. After over 90 years, the public school became what is known as University Neighborhood High School.

1999-present: University Neighborhood High School[edit | edit source ]

The high school had a very interesting concept that no other high school had in mind in Manhattan. Students from New York University (another elitist college that most of the high school's students apply to and a few get accepted) would teach students and would also run the entire school as well. Ironically, not all of today's faculty have graduated from NYU, but some of the faculty did get elitism from other colleges that UNHS boasts about in their Instagram page such as Cornell. The first president, Rosa Pietanza advocated for the school's relationship with NYU, and then left in 2005. The second president and the first male one, Robert Miller had...well, there's not much about him. But there's information about the next two presidents. The third president, Elizabeth Collins took the school on a whole new level by adding arts programs and UNHS became one of the smartest schools in all of NYC. Upon retirement, because she was the best president UNHS had, the dance studio was dedicated to her when she retired. The current president, Matthew Willie made the school even smarter than before by adding Advanced Placement classes. He also renovated some of the school but he decided to keep the history of it in order for the school's building to get a historic landmark status.

Transport[edit | edit source ]

Students that don't live near UNHS can use student Metrocards, although since Metrocards are now being phased out and replaced by OMNY cards. Those that do mostly live in the apartments nearby, or they live in another neighborhood in Manhattan.

Education[edit | edit source ]

UNHS has one of the smartest student populations in the world. Most of its alumni chose to dabble in science and engineering. However, unfortunately even though they are an elitist school, UNHS decided to use Chromebooks to lend for their students during their stay. If they were elitist, they could've gave away Microsoft Windows laptops that run the latest version. That was not the case. Some students still decide to use their own laptops, though. The courses UNHS provides include English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Phys Ed, Art, Music and Dance. They also have engineering classes that were originally occupied by other CTE classes such as Business & Entrepreneuership and Tourism because most students said that the school doesn't have enough STEM classes for some reason. Furthermore, they have a Computer Science route which students can also take part in.

Students are also forced to take a foreign language class, which is either Spanish (which is what most of its students chose) or Mandarin Chinese. They need to take a Health course during their sophomore year, and they need to take an elective. Of the graduation requirements, you need to take the Math, Science, English and Social Studies (both Global and US) Regents to graduate, in addition to the Foreign Language Regents. Because the school wants students to get a job or whatever, students must do community service such as volunteering.

They also have a College Now program which is offered by LaGuardia and it gives college courses in a high school. This gives you the idea of what a college class can look like.

Social media activities[edit | edit source ]

If one of their students manages to get into a prestegious college, the school will post something on Instagram which includes the photo of the student holding the college's pennant and other pictures of the college they are attending. The caption will usually say "congratulations to [insert student's name here] for their admittance to whatever college is being attended" in all caps, then goes into detail about the college's history and what the student is majoring in, then the student would thank others. This doesn't apply to every student, apparently. Maybe they just forgot. At some point during the spring semester, the school will allow the graduating seniors to place the name of their college below their name and picture to a song that they chose and post it on their Instagram Stories. Most of the popular choices are rap songs.

The likely chances of you getting into a prestegious college can be increased by attending clubs, being in a sports team, taking Advanced Placement courses and more.

Music taste[edit | edit source ]

There are many ways to make friends at UNHS, such as going to clubs, but the most common way is by music taste. These are the artists that are likely and unlikely to get you a friend:

Guaranteed[edit | edit source ]

  • Kendrick Lamar
  • Drake
  • SZA
  • Kanye West
  • Bad Bunny
  • Travis Scott
  • Frank Ocean

Likely[edit | edit source ]

  • Any K-pop boy or girl band
  • 21 Savage
  • Doja Cat
  • The Weeknd
  • Lana Del Rey
  • Tyler, The Creator

Neutral[edit | edit source ]

  • Playboi Carti
  • "On the Verge" artists that get played on the radio frequently (this depends on the artist, but the closest example I could think of is Benson Boone)

Unlikely[edit | edit source ]

  • Any artist that is only known in one country

Will never get you any friends[edit | edit source ]

  • Ed Sheeran (despite all of the faculty listening to his music and being huge fans of him, you will never make actual student friends if you like his music)
  • Taylor Swift
  • Any artist that has less than 100K monthly listeners on Spotify
  • Artists that fell off

Battle of the Grades[edit | edit source ]

UNHS holds an annual Battle of the Grades season every year since 2021. Each year has a specific theme in mind, and the games and activities are also tied to these themes as well. Previously, the winning grade would win their own carnival, but for some reason they decided to make it so that the winning team gets a trip. In 2021, they began with no theme because of the COVID-19 pandemic and all schools had to be online. The Class of 2021 won after the other grades' leaders Wi-Fi connections were lagging and ended up losing internet as a result. In 2022, each grade was forced to cosplay as movie characters. The 9th graders were DC characters, the 10th graders were Pixar characters, the 11th graders were Marvel characters and the 12th graders were Disney characters. The Class of 2023 won after someone from said class dressed up as Thanos and snapped his fingers with his Infinity Gauntlet. However, instead of everyone fading away, the other grades ended up moving very slow. 2023 is when the themes started rolling out.

Notable alumni[edit | edit source ]

Despite being an elitist high school, you could not think of one single alumni that has been taught there. Even Stuyvesant had more notable people than you'd think. If anyone who graduated from UNHS sees this, please do not add your name to this section. Nobody cares unless you get your own Wikipedia article.
