I configured PB6 and PB7 to I2C using the CubeIDE GUI, and it automatically generated the code for me. I understand how I2C works but I am trying to see how HAL does it and this is the code that they generated.

I tried to look through it and dig in the I2C HAL source and header files and I don't see where they initialize the GPIO ports. I tried to look into the GPIO init and it seems like its just enabling the clocks for the ports. So where are the pins being initialized?
I could have missed it due to not fully understanding the correct wording but does anyone have any idea? I provided the generated code below:

You are looking at the wrong file, check the stm32f1xx_hal_msp.c file, the GPIO for I2C is configured in HAL_I2C_MspInit() function if the I2C peripherial is enabled.

void HAL_I2C_MspInit(I2C_HandleTypeDef* hi2c)
{
 GPIO_InitTypeDef GPIO_InitStruct = {0};
 if(hi2c->Instance==I2C1)
 {
 /* USER CODE BEGIN I2C1_MspInit 0 */
 /* USER CODE END I2C1_MspInit 0 */
 __HAL_RCC_GPIOB_CLK_ENABLE();
 /**I2C1 GPIO Configuration
 PB6 ------> I2C1_SCL
 PB7 ------> I2C1_SDA
 */
 GPIO_InitStruct.Pin = GPIO_PIN_6|GPIO_PIN_7;
 GPIO_InitStruct.Mode = GPIO_MODE_AF_OD;
 GPIO_InitStruct.Speed = GPIO_SPEED_FREQ_HIGH;
 HAL_GPIO_Init(GPIOB, &GPIO_InitStruct);
 /* Peripheral clock enable */
 __HAL_RCC_I2C1_CLK_ENABLE();
 /* USER CODE BEGIN I2C1_MspInit 1 */
 /* USER CODE END I2C1_MspInit 1 */
 }
}
```
