- "Everybody wants to be a cat."
- ―Scat Cat
Scat Cat is a supporting character in Disney's 1970 animated feature film, The Aristocats . He is the leader of the Alley Cats who plays his trumpet.
Background[ ]
Development[ ]
Scat Cat was originally written for Louis Armstrong to voice him and was originally named Satchmo Cat. Unfortunately for Armstrong, he became ill and was unable to voice the character, leading to the decision to replace him with Scatman Crothers, rename him "Scat Cat" and write a new song "Everybody Wants to Be a Cat".
Appearances[ ]
The Aristocats [ ]
One night, Thomas O'Malley brings Duchess and her three tired kittens to his penthouse, where he takes them all in with care and gives them a place to sleep. Jazz music can be heard from inside, and Scat Cat and his Alley Cats are introduced. While playing their instruments, Scat Cat and the gang all sing "Everybody Wants to Be a Cat". O'Malley and Duchess join in the fun, as do Berlioz, Marie, and Toulouse. During the song, O'Malley and Duchess perform a dance number, and Duchess sings a wonderful solo while playing the harp, which Scat Cat and the gang find so beautiful, soft, lovely, and romantic until they get back to playing their instruments (with the help of Scat Cat's trumpeting) and make their way out of the penthouse along with other alley cats.
Later, Scat Cat and the gang, upon being informed by O'Malley via Roquefort (the latter of whom nearly got killed by them due to getting the name wrong), come to rescue Duchess and her kittens from Edgar, a greedy butler who is "catnapping" the cats so as to inherit a great fortune. As Scat Cat and the alley cats rush to help O'Malley save Duchess and her kittens, they were also witnessed by a Frenchman proceeding to drink wine. He saw cats seemingly being chased by a mouse (Roquefort). Believing he was hallucinating, the Frenchman then poured his wine onto the ground, implying he is deeply considering to give up drinking alcohol.
After Scat Cat and the gang defeat Edgar, Scat Cat, along with the other alley cats, get adopted by Madame Adelaide Bonfamille at the end of the movie.
House of Mouse [ ]
In the show, Scat Cat, O'Malley, and the other alley cats were all a part of the popular band "O'Malley and the Alley Cats." However, as a running gag in the show, something or someone would prevent the band from playing.
Once Upon a Studio [ ]
In the short, Scat Cat joins in on playing the beginning notes of "When You Wish Upon a Star" on his trumpet with Alan-A-Dale on his lute, Mirabel Madrigal on her accordion, and Hathi, Jr. on his trunk when all the Disney characters were disappointed at the group photo being ruined. As they played the song, they joined the rest of the characters where they managed to take a perfect group photo.
Disney Parks [ ]
An orange version of Scat Cat once appeared at Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom in the 1970s and 80s alongside other colorful versions of his band.
Scat Cat also serves as the namesake of Scat Cat's Club at Disney's Port Orleans Resort at Walt Disney World and can be seen in a mural at the Center Street Coffeehouse at Tokyo Disneyland.

- "A cool, smooth-talking and energetic cat with a love for jazz and a talent for the trumpet."
- ―Scat Cat's in-game Hero description.
Scat Cat in Disney Heroes: Battle Mode
Scat Cat is a playable character in Disney Heroes: Battle Mode . Introduced in Update 7.4., Scat Cat is a Back-Line Damage role hero on the Red Team. This is the first time Scat Cat is a playable character in a Disney crossover game, and also his first interactions with Disney characters from other movies and shows. Scat Cat's skills are: "Trumpet Fury", "Splash Strike", "Scratch Whack", "Classy Cat Cap", and "Scat's Red Tie". These skills allow Scat Cat to (in the order):
- "Trumpet Fury":
- Passive: Scat Cat plays one note with his trumpet that resonates through all enemies, dealing bonus Fantastic Damage for each Movement Speed buff and debuff on them.
- Active: Scat Cat plays his trumpet with explosive energy, dealing Fantastic Damage to all enemies while also applying Shatter and Silence for a few seconds. Additionally, Scat Cat grants all his allies a percent of Attack and Movement Speed Increase for a few seconds.
- "Splash Strike": Scat Cat throws a bucket of water at the enemy with the most buffs, applying a Damage Over Time to him and all nearby enemies, dealing Fantastic Damage per second and converting their Attack and Movement speed Buffs to Attack and Movement Speed Debuffs for a few seconds. During this time, all current and subsequent buffs received by these enemies have their duration reduced by a percent.
- "Scratch Whack": Scat Cat scratches the "Most Wanted" enemy a certain amount of times, dealing Fantastic Damage and an additional amount for every percent bonus Movement Speed they have and preventing them from gaining any further increases in Attack Speed for the next few seconds. During that time, any attempt at applying or receiving Attack or Movement Speed buffs Stuns the "Most Wanted" enemy for a few seconds.
- "Classy Cat Cap": Every time an enemy attempts to receive a Movement Speed buff, Scat Cat gains Skill Power for a few seconds and stacks of Momentum. Scat Cat can only receive up to a cap of Skill Power this way.
- "Scat's Red Tie": Scat Cat exploits each enemy's bonus Movement Speed, dealing additional damage equal to the percentage of Bonus Movement Speed they have. Scat Cat now grants all allies Fantastic Damage on all their Skills and Basic Attacks while they have a Movement Speed Buff on them. Scat Cat’s Basic Attacks extend the duration of all enemies Attack and Movement Speed debuffs by a few seconds. This effect can only happen once every few seconds.
Scat Cat has friendship campaigns with Sadness and Thomas O'Malley.
