Education

As Muffy Thomas, she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Stirling,[10] and completed a PhD in Computational Science at the University of St Andrews in 1988.[11]

Research

Calder summarises her research interests as "mathematical modelling and automated reasoning for concurrent, communicating systems".[12] Calder published a very influential overview on the feature interaction problem,[13] with more than 300 citations at Google Scholar.[7] Her research has extended to applying computer science methods to biochemical networks and cell signalling in bioinformatics, resulting in a number of papers.[7]

Calder has been Head of Department of Computing Science and Dean of Research (Science and Engineering) at the University of Glasgow.[14]

Public Service

Muffy Calder became Chief Scientific Adviser to the Scottish Government on 1 March 2012.[10] Previously Calder has served as Chair of the UK Computing Research Committee and Chair of the BCS Academy of Computing Research Committee.[10]

Awards

Muffy was awarded an OBE in the New Year's Honours List, 2011.[15] Calder holds fellowships in the Royal Academy of Engineering,Vorlage:Fact Royal Society of Edinburgh,Vorlage:Fact the BCS and the IET.[16] Calder was listed as 21st most influential woman in Scotland, 2012, by The Herald.[17]

Personal life

Before her marriage to Dave Calder in 1998,[18] [19] she was known as Muffy Thomas and widely published under that name. Her interests include running, climbing, and playing in a string quartet.[20]
