Sassiw

Sasov (also Sasov [Rus, Yid]; Sasów [Pol]; Sasiv(Сасів) [Ukr]; Sassów, Sassov) is a town in Lvov district, Ukraine. Until the year 1772 the town was within Poland. Until 1919 it was under Austrian rule. Until 1945 the town was reverted to Poland. Sasov was founded in 1615. King Sigismund III granted the town much autonomy and the king bestowed also many privileges on its merchants and instituted market days. In 1726 Jacob Sobieski, son of King John III Sobieski, garanted a privilege to the Jews of Sasov. In 1764 there were 223 Jews in Sasov. In Sasov was Moses Leib of Sasov. 1880 there were 1, 906 Jews in Sasov.
