The electrons of atoms exist at varying distances from the nucleus, which are known as shells or energy levels. The elements in the periodic table are arranged into rows (known as groups or families), and columns (known as periods) based on how many shells of electron an atom possesses and the number of electron in outer-shell respectively. The electron configurations of atoms primarily determines their chemical reactivity, and particularly the the outer-shell (or "valence") electrons. For more information (see Electron configuration).
