Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy . You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.
More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk , Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.
- Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
- All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
- Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
- Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
- To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
- If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
- Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
- For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

svgs
[edit ]Some help regarding your finding that text is sometimes black rectangles (File:Arasement_Joue.svg): The renderer used here does not support flow elements which are inserted by inkscape if you drag a text area. See Help:SVG#Fonts. And best test your svg before uploading here: Commons:SVG Check. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 13:15, 18 January 2011 (UTC) [reply ]

Instructions for adding Vector versions of pixel graphics
[edit ]Let's say there is an image named File:ASDFG.jpg.
Make an identical vector version of it.
Upload the new file as File:ASDFG.svg. Use the same license(s) as File:ASDFG.jpg.
Click on "edit" at the top
Change the source to say something like, "Vector image by User:Gregors, derived from ASDFG.jpg"
At the bottom, add the same categories as File:ASDFG.jpg.
Also add an SVG category if appropriate.
Click on "save"
Then go to File:ASDFG.jpg
Click on "edit" at the top
Add
to the text, generally as the last thing above the categories.
If the file has the
new image name
.template, remove it.
Click on "save"
Note that the word "File" is not used in the template -- the template will add it automatically. You may then go to each of the uses of the old file and change the link to the svg, but that is not essential and may be difficult in some WP languages that you can not read.
Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 15:48, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
Uploading it with http://toolserver.org/~luxo/derivativeFX/ and adding
File:Presionvapor.svg is a vector version of this file.
File:Gregors → File:Presionvapor.svg
For more information, see Help:SVG.

(note the "|" instead of "/") to non-SVG versions is generally sufficient. -- Docu at 05:33, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
Very true, but I have found the various special purpose uploaders confusing and difficult on occasion, so I stick to the general purpose one and recommend it for newbies and experienced users. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 10:36, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
Hi Gregors!
Read your note and instructions above. When I generate the sky plots with Aladin at SIMBAD, I drag the image over to a file and it is copied as a .png. To make it a .svg, is all I have to do is change .png to .svg or change it with an application like Preview (I have an Imac)? I'll try one and see what happens. Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:44, 14 February 2011 (UTC) [reply ]

[edit ]Please, can you upload SVGs created with Inkscape, allways as normal SVG and not as "Inkscape-SVG" ? It's important, because we shoudt have only valid SVGs on Commons. You can check that by direct input on the validator page. Antonsusi (talk) 20:58, 10 March 2011 (UTC) [reply ]

You shouldn't add a "vector version available" template to a page until you know that the SVG is actually working.... AnonMoos (talk) 15:59, 27 March 2011 (UTC) [reply ]
Did you really fake the typeface? I can't see any difference at the first sight ;-) That's a brilliant work, thank you! odder (talk) 09:20, 29 March 2011 (UTC) [reply ]

Lee Ranch Wind Speed Frequency svg
[edit ]Gregors - thanks for your contribution. "Wind power" at Wikipedia is currently under a large rewrite, and it was noted by another editor that this graph does not have numerical values along the right-side, making it somewhat confusing. I would assume that the values for MWh are the same as those for hours, but it's that assumption that is being questioned. Your input is appreciated.
--E8 (talk) 17:45, 6 April 2012 (UTC) [reply ]
There are no values on the right because this graph is general and not specific for a given turbine but for the energy available for a given distribution of wind speeds.
