The path to .htpasswd defined in ../cgi-bin/.htaccess must contain the Apache Site Root, as defined in members.nfs.net/username/sites/mysite. In other words, it must be something like /NFSdomain/siteshortname/protected/.htpasswd, NOT /home/protected/.htpasswd. (Assuming your .htpasswd is in /home/protected.)

NFS does not allow you to actually run a gemini/gopher server; only HTTP/HTTPS. (which I somehow only realized after spending several hours on #1. :P)
