MakingLab-BIB

Projects from BIB people in/for the Making Lab.

1: LNDW preparation

2: Other project will follow.

History

On March 5 2026, Five people from the library met in the Making Lab with Julien Colomb (www.openmake.de) to know about the space and discuss whether we can do something for the long night of science in June 2026. People indicated what they were interested in:

Participants showed their interest in understanding how the space is organised (what is available to whom to what conditions), there were a special interest in the machines, especially the laser cutter. In addition, they were interested in learning how the Making Lab can be a place for to have creative ideas and making these real through manual work. Finally, people wanted to discuss how the Making Lab can transform the library offer, how it may bring and connect students around topics of circular economy and sustainable businesses.

We then discussed several aspect of the work we would like to perform in the Making Lab, here some notes.

LNDW

Goal is to present the BIB as a place of learning (Ort des Lernen). A sub-goal is to show what are the possibilities of the Making Lab.

The target audience are children 6-14 years old. What they can "actually" do is limited (we did painting last year).

Ort des lernens

With "learning" in the library, it is meant:

  • Learning together (library provides specific rooms for collaborative learning)
  • learning by doing (a specificity of the Making Lab)
  • self-learning (this can also be self-organised goups, like for the bicyle-reparation group)

Making lab machines

  • 3D printer
  • Laser cutter (not for the LNDW)
  • vinyl cutter
  • CNC milling machine
  • saws, ...

Putative motos:

  • "I do something myself"
  • "we create something together"
  • Maybe start with a question and derive an object from the answer (what can you learn here?)

Objects

goal = as publicity for the Making Lab or/and for the BIB, we might use the BIB logo on different objects.

  • Key holders
  • fridge magnets
  • cable organisers
  • whistle
  • book cover

Common object idea

We had some thought about having participants develop something together, in relation to one question we would ask. We would prepare some object, kids would paint them and we would then put the object together in a "mobile" or something equivalent.

We may then have parents take picture of their child in front of the unfinished object, and tell them we will publish a photo of the finished object on the Open.Make website.

Other projects

We talked about what could be done to attract the attention of other target groups like students and professors.

The "Nachhaligkeit" working group at the Bib could be interested to use the Lab.

This group could become a pool of knowledge about the Making Lab. This would allows to build a sustainability plan for the Making Lab independent on the Open.Make team.
