I forgot that Git commit messages are plaintext, that's why the commit summary looks a bit weird.

Pressing Ctrl-Shift-U allows you to enter the number after the U+ to insert arbitrary Unicode.

I have my right alt set as a compose key, so for mdash I do RAlt - - -, and for ndash I do RAlt - - ..
