Confirmation Checklist

Please explain your proposal with as many details as necessary (Ex. what you're suggesting, why you're suggesting it, what need you thinks it will fill, who it will benefit, etc...).

Hello, @celenity!

I've been thinking that it might be worth updating the repository's appearance, like organizing the README and the overall documentation structure. I know it's a chore considering it doesn't add any new features, but right now the documentation is pretty hard to understand and work with.
Do you have any plans or ideas on how the wiki/docs should look?

As for the visual design, I'd like to give the repo a cool look and also create some assets (icons, banners, or whatever). Why is this important? It helps build project identity. For example, we could try creating a mascot or a character (I can "paint" (create) some AI-generated characters as a starting point, though they'd need tweaking, but it would be awesome if we could find an artist to help out). However, I'd prefer sticking with a mascot-style logo like we have now, but just try a different take on it. Oh, by the way, do you have an SVG version of the Phoenix logo? That would save some time, but if not, I can always trace it in Inkscape.

Also, regarding promotion. It would be cool to do some promo on social platforms (or FOSS-related community servers/chats/topics) like Lemmy (funnily enough, I think I actually discovered this project on Lemmy), Reddit, Mastodon, X, or do some kind of collaboration (like LibreWolf x Phoenix bit weird, maybe, but in theory, it could help attract new contributors. Looking at the commit history, it seems like you're doing almost all the work, and I'm not exactly an expert at browser development).

I'd love to hear your thoughts, but if this isn't something you're interested in or you don't want to spend time on it, I completely understand. Also, you're the main maintainer, so it's crucial to discuss these ideas with you first.

Here are some examples of repos with cool designs (yeah, making a project website would be awesome too, but I don't think it's a priority right now):

Edit: add LibreTube

I like the Phoenix logo but I always thought it would look much better centered and with a coat of arms look and feel. Nothing too loud, simple and to the point. If Celenity agrees, I am more than willing to produce it myself for the project.

Thank you for filing this issue and sharing your thoughts/ideas/suggestions!

I've been thinking that it might be worth updating the repository's appearance, like organizing the README and the overall documentation structure. I know it's a chore considering it doesn't add any new features, but right now the documentation is pretty hard to understand and work with.

Agreed, this is something we need to improve. You've done some great work on this already with #269, which is very much appreciated!

Do you have any plans or ideas on how the wiki/docs should look?

Honestly, nothing immediately comes to mind - definitely open to any ideas/suggestions/etc. though.

These are great ideas! I agree these would definitely help in terms of building project identity/image and branding.

Oh, by the way, do you have an SVG version of the Phoenix logo? That would save some time, but if not, I can always trace it in Inkscape.

Unfortunately, I don't believe I do - but @Gnu1 was the creator of the logo in its current state, so maybe he does?

Also, regarding promotion. It would be cool to do some promo on social platforms (or FOSS-related community servers/chats/topics) like Lemmy (funnily enough, I think I actually discovered this project on Lemmy), Reddit, Mastodon, X, or do some kind of collaboration (like LibreWolf x Phoenix bit weird, maybe, but in theory, it could help attract new contributors. Looking at the commit history, it seems like you're doing almost all the work, and I'm not exactly an expert at browser development).

I agree, promotion would be great (and very much appreciated) in terms of growing the project! I think it'd be beneficial in terms of gaining new contributors (You're correct that I'm currently doing almost all the work ATM), getting more eyes on it (so people can better audit/understand Phoenix's changes/features), and having more users in general would also strengthen our resistance against fingerprinting. So any help there would definitely be welcome and appreciated.

LibreWolf x Phoenix

FWIW, I do maintain active contact with the LibreWolf devs (ex. I'm in their build/dev room on Matrix). In fact, one of the LibreWolf devs (@any1here) recently started contributing to Phoenix directly, and has tried pushing for them to adopt it as well (it's actually due to this that I made some changes to Phoenix's build system to allow better integration with external browsers/forks). So, my point is that a collaboration of that nature could theoretically be possible.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, but if this isn't something you're interested in or you don't want to spend time on it, I completely understand. Also, you're the main maintainer, so it's crucial to discuss these ideas with you first.

I'm definitely interested in your ideas here! I agree that your proposals would be beneficial to the project overall, and I'm definitely in support of them/interested in doing whatever I can to help make them a reality.

(yeah, making a project website would be awesome too, but I don't think it's a priority right now)

Yeah, a website would be great as well (and it is something I've put some thought into before) - but I agree it's probably not the highest priority ATM.

@MahoganyPrime

If Celenity agrees, I am more than willing to produce it myself for the project.

Sure, I'd be interested to see what you have in mind!

@celenity, @MahoganyPrime, I've made a couple of variations. What do you think?

phoenix-icon
phoenix-logo

In any case, this is just the first version, and besides, I want to move away from using this logo because it's based on someone else's work. @celenity, if you have any references, feel free to share a few images from the internet so I can understand which direction to move in.

I think once the work on the new logo is finished, we can close this issue.

I have been working on a logo too. Original work for the Phoenix project.

This is direct screenshot of my working canvas thus the messy look. The final output, of course, will be pristine. The logo is still missing some fine touches before ready.

Font displayed is Iosevka Curly Slab (standard and modified. Work in progress) The Coat of Arms will not feature full text on the sides, the vertical text will be replaced with adornments. Bottom P will be replaced with "Phoenix"

I do not know if the Phoenix project already has a chosen font. Please let me know.

@koru @celenity I would like to know what both of you think of it.

Undoubtedly, excellent work has been done, but here are a few things to consider:

  • Logo must always be easily readable, meaning high contrast and no background noise.
  • I feel the chosen font isn't quite suitable for a logo because of its weight, at the very least, a bold version should be used.
  • Furthermore, if your design is used as an icon (e.g., on a taskbar), it just won't look right.

What I liked:

  • The mascot is drawn sick.

But then again, it looks more like a coat of arms or a banner.

Points I took into account in my work:

I looked at the Firefox logo and borrowed a few ideas, since the project is related to this browser, it wouldn't be amiss to have some "similarities":

  • Round logo.
  • Font similar to Mozilla's corporate font.

To sum up, I don't mean to offend anyone, but not every drawing can be made into an icon, and not every icon can be turned into a piece of art, but that is exactly what we are here to discuss.

Thank you very much for you input. I appreciate it. :)

I did start with the existing phoenix logo style. I still have that design. Along the way I created the one I posted above to make it look and feel more like the coat of arm I set out to design. It didn't crossed my mind that icons were a needed use case. I was designing for a webpage.

You made excellent points. I will apply them and present them.

@koru @celenity

Sharing what I have thus far. Kept the OG phoenix design thought a bit more rounded skull appeals more to me.

Added a circular background with a flame pattern. Cutout style allows for background color of whatever canvas the image sits on top of to highlight the logo itself.

Also, showcasing a selection of floss fonts that look like those used by FF proper, including one they use themselves.

I think Inter and Roboto fonts are the way!

Also we must change color scheme:

Something new:

@MahoganyPrime, First looks good mostly cause' constrast colors. Can you show monochrome version? Also I think Inter font is the way, but only bold version.

@MahoganyPrime, any thoughts/opinion about colors/fonts? Do you have your own vision/options?

I like the current version. I like the look and feel of it. The background turned out great and it meets the circular requirement in the style needed for the logo to be as versatile as needed.

The Inter font is great and keeps harmony among Phoenix and Firefox's branding. With that said, I find Iosevka to be a befitting font/typeface family given the technical freedom it allows its users to tailor the font to their needs and wants. Just like it, Phoenix allows for its users to tailor Phoenix to better fit their privacy and security needs. By default, the out-of-the-box experience of each is solid but if ever needed the option for personalization is there and well supported.

In this new set I have produced some monochrome versions, highlighted Dark, Light and a banded monochrome flame [bottom-lef]. My favorite in this selection is the center-logo where the Phoenix is displayed in its classic color in front of a sectional colored flame.

Second image. Upper logo. Awesome! Can do you 2 versions: first is colored logo with black/#222222 text on full white background and second is white logo and white text on black background?

Awesome. Glad to see you too like that version.

Some clarification for the request. I have been using #F6DDDD as the equivalent of white (lightest color in use) I took this color from one of the pallets we have been working with. With that said, I have rendered the light version request with pure white.

If we are all happy with this version - It is not clear to me if @celenity has been following this - let me know which are the necessary outputs the project requires so that I may render them natively.

Monochrome version is awesome! But I don't like black outline around icon in color version.

@koru @MahoganyPrime Thank you both for your time/work here! Finally got a chance to take a look through and get caught up with this thread.

If we are all happy with this version

Looks great to me!

let me know which are the necessary outputs the project requires so that I may render them natively.

Hmm, will need to think about this.

Awesome. I'm glad that you like the design ^_^

System-display
The usual icon sizes are 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128, 256, 512 that is including icon for HDPI displays. If these are needed: For linux logo_size.png files and a .svg would be needed. For windows a .ico would be needed.

Web-display

Well here we meet what is required. What is needed is generated.
I notice the logo on main page has changed to a banner. If you need another one like it with the new logo on a dark gray background of the same size, let me know.

What do you guys think of a banner to post on social feeds and whatnot? A slogan would be nice to have for this. Post on website to link back to project page.

Banner/background for your social profile or the like.
