I'm seriously considering to remove the mine turtle. This is obviously just a creeper clone (from MC), and I just inherited this mob from Pixture. And Repixure should be defined by what is does not have as well.

The creeper in MC can be really annoying as it can

  1. be an insta-kill
  2. destroy your building progress

The same is true for the mine turtle in Repixture. But this game is meant to be accessible for newcomers to the genre. Having an insta-kill mob makes this game more difficult than it should be.

Possible options:

  1. [CHOSEN] Remove mine turtle entirely
  2. Convert mine turtle to regular turtle
  3. Keep mine turtle, but as a Creative-only mob
  4. Nerf the mine turtle somehow

Before I remove this mob, I want to add some other new mobs first.

I think 3 and 4 work if you've put a lot of work and care into it. It'd be funny if it was some rare mob in caves or dungeons lol

I do agree that it is annoying though - it is difficult to escape as it runs at a speed (ironically) slightly faster than the player... It's funny goofing it up with water though

I didn't entirely consider it a creeper clone, thinking it was an evil form of the mine turtle in asdfmovie lol - surprised that sitting on its button doesn't instantly explode it X3

I also agree you could go for the 4° option, for now. 2° and 3° options aren't bad too.

It's really one of few mobs that are actually hostile to the player and gives a challenge. It also rarely spawns during the game, so it shouldn't be a major problem most of the time (maybe it serves as an easter egg? idk).

Another option could be to allow it to be disabled in settings, maybe off by default, and with a combination with 4. Or you could convert it so there is a normal passive turtle, and if the setting is enabled there is also a dangerous mine turtle variant.

I think the best solution would really be 4. My suggestion:

  1. Nerf their damage. They shouldn't instakill the player, even when they have no armor. Make it something that would leave you at 1/4th the health you had before (if you had full health, of course).
  2. Limit their spawn by height and light level, so that they only spawn in caves and unlit mines. These are mine turtles, they shouldn't spawn on the surface at day!
  3. Finally, increase their spawn just a notch to balance things out. I suppose it was set so low because they are currently quite unfair, but once they're nerfed, it's no longer needed.

I think I made a decision. I want to go with removing it entirely.
It's not just that the mine turtle can be an instakill but it destroys the landscape. Which is quite annoying. I could make it so that explosions don't destroy nodes but that’s kinda boring.

As for the idea of only spawning it underground, then it doesn't really fit. It's a turtle.

Thanks for your suggestions so far, but I’m not really convinced. Sorry. :P
No matter what tweaks I do to this mob, the exploding nature is the core problem and it's not fitting with the development philosophy.

I like your idea of having just rare mobs in general. That’s something I want to keep in mind when I actually start adding new mobs. I have planned to add various rare things in Repixture to make it more interesting.

I still want to add new mobs before actually removing this mob. There are many other ways to add quirky, interesting or creative mobs, but the mine turtle is not one of them.
