This option allows to exclude the backup files created by the updater.

The updater's backup directory in the data directory (path updater-*/backups) usually takes a lot of disk space and the files are not really that important.

If you set this option to true, the path is excluded when creating the tarball.

Good point. Including the updater's backup dir shouldn't be necessary in most cases.
