We got questions about this topic on our last DID, specifically from people who want to ditch Spotify. In that particular example we showed them TIDAL (and I think Deezer) as an alternative. But maybe the recipe should go beyond just listing alternative streaming providers and contain information on where to buy (drm-free) music. First stop should probably always be the artists own website, to see if they sell directly.
But not everyone wants to deal with music files, so a list of alternative and less problematic streaming providers should be part of it too. (I am not knowledgeable enough about mustic streaming providers to recommend a selection of them).
Recipe request: Music streaming #49
From what I know, if you focus on artist payout this usually goes:
Band/Artist page > BandCamp > Tidal
BandCamp has some streaming too, but haven't used that lately, was kinda different (under developed) in the past.
So this recipe might also have to deal with how to host your own streaming environment, if you want to go the artist page route - but still want to stream.
Good point about Bandcamp. As mentioned in #48, we should probably focus on a recipe for everyday users first, and selfhosting probably shouldn't be a big part of that. Maybe we could mention some selfhosted streaming options (Jellyfin, Navidrome, Subsonic, ...) at the end but without much elaboration.
Is selfhosting at all feasible for these recipes? It was my understanding that they are targeted towards non-technical people.
Not really. You might be able to increase the level of Accessibility that we list for a guide, to communicate it. But it's mostly not what this is about.
