Recipe request: Cloud Storage #48

We got questions about this topic on our last DID. Some thoughts on what the recipe could mention:

  • Continue using big-tech cloud storage, but switch to client-side encryption (meta and usage data can still be exposed)
  • Move to less problematic providers (which ones? probably still recommending client-side encryption)
  • Syncthing, if it's just about syncing date between devices
  • (Self)hosted Nextcloud (probably still recommending client-side encryption if not self-hosting)

I don't want to dismiss this, but I'm not sure if "getting questions about something" is enough to make a good recipe. In general, I think we want to encourage people talking to each other.

Regarding the recipe itself, I'm a bit worried, as it will be fairly complex to get this into a neat/working format that's easy to understand.

We might have to split this up into multiple with different difficulties, which would make it easier to tackle some of these. Still, I don't really think this is the place for expert level recipes (e.g. complete self hosted nextcloud setup)

The things I mentioned are just some first thoughts of mine, I don't believe the recipe must/should contain all of them. I opened this issue to get it into the backlog :) (or do we have another resource that lists what recipes are being worked on or are wished for?)

It would be a good idea to split recipes of differing "expert levels", and we should definitely focus on the ones that help everyday users, and selfhosting arguably shouldn't be given much more attention than simply mentioning it. I believe people who have the means to selfhost will know where to look for resources about that.
