Financial Transparency? #28

Greetings,

I'm a codeberg supporter and think this is an amazing project.

I'm also an ethusiast of Effective Altruism, which encourages people to understand how their donations are doing (although you don't need to super scrutinize every little donation!) to do the most good.

Do you think it would be beneficial to share some of the org's finances (maybe here, could be a simple yearly statement) so we can understand the expenses and needs better?

Gustavo

Hi, as a member you should have access to https://codeberg.org/Codeberg-e.V./ .

There is also an anual report with some words on finance:

Thanks, however I am not a member (I support through Liberapay), and am unsure if I should become one. The problem with requiring membership is that it requires us first to become members and then evaluate the finances.

Would it be possible to publish a (perhaps annual?) summary that is public for extra transparency?

I'll forward this discussion for decision among the Codeberg e.V. members.

IIRC, there were some voices which wanted to keep certain stuff "secret". The only argument I recall was the "chicken egg problem" with financial stuff. Codeberg cannot pay the cost for x, so we need more money. But since we don't yet pay the cost for x, we have some spare money, so people might think there is no need to donate ...

x in backup machines, office, staff, ...

I also ask for the Codeberg organization to publicly report its finances. As see it as vital for maintaining trust as non-profit and community project, and Codeberg also uses non-profit status as a "marketing" strategy as seen in the homepage.
