Hello Codeberg people!

I read your mission statement on the main page and it resonates with me. Have you by chance heard of ForgeFed? It's a project that aims to federate forges (websites like codeberg.org) using ActivityPub. I'm working on it because I wish to solve these same problems that you wrote about on the main page.

Since your mission and the ForgeFed mission have so much in common, I thought I'd mention it to you. If you're interested, you're welcome to join #peers on Freenode or the forum (it may look empty because we recently moved the forum location, so it's new, for reference the old forum is here).

Maybe there are ways we can collaborate? :)

There's some crossover with #142, but it seems to me that this issue here at #49 should remain open, since ActivityPub social networking is a different project to the question of openID logins (there may be some overlap - I don't know the tech details) - to centralise any discussion by Codeberg developers/users on ForgeFed progress or implementation in Codeberg.

In my opinion, we should leave it open as a place to discuss and track progress for achieving federation, because if you ask me, that should be one of our top priorities.

I wonder if it would be easier to retrofit federation into Gitea or to write a new server (or join an existing effort) that uses federation as its core principle from day one.

Gitea is implementing federation now, work is done and they received some funding for it. We are really looking forward to seeing this.

I'm going to close this generic issue. Feel free to support the effort upstream, if possible. We'll certainly do our best, if we can.

These look like the main discussions at gitea at github:

federation theme at gitea: https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea/labels/theme%2Ffederation

Status of tasks that are done/not-yet-done: https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea/issues/18240 (currently, 3 out of 11 tasks have 'done' status)
