What are Instagram Notes?

Instagram Notes are short updates that appear above your mutual followers’ profile pictures in the direct messages (DMs) section of your Instagram app. They are similar to Instagram Stories in that they last for 24 hours and then disappear. Notes can be up to 60 characters long, and you can only share one note at a time. Originally text-only, Notes now also allow you to add music, short videos, and even replies.

Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri shares in an update on Instagram that "Notes have quickly become a popular way for people to share thoughts or status updates with their Close Friends or people who follow them back. They’re sort of like AIM status, for those of you old enough to remember that reference."

Can I see who viewed my Instagram Notes?

Yes, you can see who viewed your Instagram Notes. To check, just tap on your note in the DMs section, and you’ll see a list of everyone who has viewed it.

How long do Instagram Notes last?

Instagram Notes last for 24 hours before disappearing. However, if you add a note to a post or reel, it will remain visible for three days.

How do I use Instagram Notes?

Creating a new Note is quite simple. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

• Tap on the DMs icon on the top right corner of your screen.
• Tap ‘Note...’ above your profile picture at the top of your Instagram inbox.
• Type in your note (1). To add music, tap the audio icon (2). To add a video, tap your profile picture (2) and then the blue button at the bottom to begin recording your video. Videos can only be two seconds long.
• Choose who to share your note with (followers that you follow back or your close friends list).
• Tap Share in the top right to share your note.

Once shared, the note will appear above the profile pictures of your mutual followers in their DMs.
