The phrase "service of righteousness" suggests an active, ongoing commitment to living according to God's will. This service results in "quiet confidence," a state of inner assurance and trust in God's promises. The Hebrew concept here implies tranquility and security, which comes from a life lived in obedience to God. This confidence is not temporary but eternal, reflecting the everlasting nature of God's covenant with His people. Culturally, this would contrast with the instability and fear often experienced by nations surrounding Israel. In the New Testament, this idea is mirrored in Philippians 4:7, where the peace of God guards the hearts and minds of believers in Christ Jesus. This eternal confidence is ultimately fulfilled in the believer's eternal security in Christ, as seen in John 10:28-29.
“The work of righteousness” speaks of God-produced actions that align with His character. Isaiah looks ahead to a Spirit-outpoured era (Isaiah 32:15) when hearts are changed and lives re-ordered.
• Romans 6:22 reminds, “But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the fruit you reap leads to holiness, and the outcome is eternal life.”
• Ephesians 2:10 affirms that believers are “created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance.”
Because God Himself authors this righteousness, what follows is not turmoil but blessing.
When righteousness is at work, peace is its inevitable fruit.
• Romans 5:1: “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
• Isaiah 26:3: “You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You.”
This peace is both vertical—reconciliation with God—and horizontal—harmony with others (James 3:18: “Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit of righteousness”).
Isaiah shifts from the inward “work” to the outward “service” (or practice) of righteousness. It describes daily conduct, decisions, and acts of justice that flow from a heart made right.
• Micah 6:8 calls us “to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”
• Matthew 5:16 urges, “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Such service is never mere duty; it is the overflow of a transformed life.
The immediate results of righteousness—peace—settle into a lasting posture: “quiet confidence.”
• Proverbs 3:25-26 promises, “Do not be afraid of sudden terror… for the LORD will be your confidence.”
• Hebrews 10:35 encourages, “So do not throw away your confidence; it holds a great reward.”
This assurance is not temporary; Isaiah adds “forever.” God’s righteousness secures an enduring, unshakable calm, even amid external upheaval (Psalm 112:6-8).
Isaiah 32:17 assures that when God’s righteousness is received and practiced, it produces peace, blossoms into active service, and settles believers into lifelong, unbroken confidence. The verse is both a promise and a pattern: righteousness → peace → quiet, durable assurance—benefits that stand firm for all who walk in the Lord’s ways.
Verse 17. - The work of righteousness shall be peace. Peace - a true peace, not a false one (Jeremiah 6:14) - shall be the result of the reign of righteousness. War, quarrels, enmity, hostile feelings, are all of them the fruit of unrighteousness. In the kingdom of the Messiah, just so far forth as it is thoroughly established, "the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace" (James 3:18). The effect of righteousness; literally, the service of righteousness, which perhaps means here "the wages of righteousness." Quietness and assurance; or, quietness and confidence (comp. Isaiah 30:15). The final happiness of the blessed in Christ's kingdom is always spoken of as a state of "rest and quietness" (see Psalm 95:11; Job 3:17; Jeremiah 6:16; Matthew 11:28; Hebrews 4:9-11, etc.). The "confidence" felt would be an assured confidence, not a rash and foolish one, like that of the women of vers. 10, 11.
