And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father's house.

Ezra 9:8 And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.
Ecclesiastes 12:11 The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.
Zechariah 10:4 Out of him came forth the corner, out of him the nail, out of him the battle bow, out of him every oppressor together.

Genesis 45:9-13 Haste ye, and go up to my father, and say unto him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt: come down unto me, tarry not: …
1 Samuel 2:8 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD'S, and he hath set the world upon them.
Esther 4:14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
The LORD would establish Eliakim securely in the office removed from Shebna. Like a tent peg fixed in solid ground, Eliakim would provide stability for the royal house through faithful service under Hezekiah. His appointment rested on God’s sovereign purpose rather than personal ambition. Yet no earthly servant can bear ultimate weight; the secure foundation toward which this image points is Christ, the chosen cornerstone upon whom God’s people are established.

and he will be a throne of glory
Eliakim’s authority would bring honor to his father’s house and benefit to Judah. As royal steward, he would represent the king’s administration with dignity and responsibility. The glory of such office anticipates the greater reign of Christ, who possesses all authority and sits in everlasting majesty at the Father’s right hand.

Eliakim’s elevation would bring strength and honor to his family line, in sharp contrast to Shebna’s coming disgrace. God’s dealings with Eliakim display His faithfulness in raising up servants who will carry out His purposes. The promise also reflects the larger hope fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Son of David, whose kingdom brings lasting blessing to all who belong to Him.

• The initiative belongs to the LORD—“I will,” not “he will.” God personally replaces the unfaithful steward Shebna with Eliakim (Isaiah 22:20-22).
• Scripture often shows the LORD raising up and removing leaders (Daniel 2:21; 1 Samuel 16:1, 13). His sovereign action guarantees the outcome.
• A peg hammered into a wall was a dependable hook that bore weight. God pictures Eliakim as that reliable support.
• Ezra 9:8: “But now… our God has given us a peg in His holy place.” The same image highlights security granted by grace.
• Ecclesiastes 12:11 speaks of “well-driven nails,” pointing again to steadfast truth that can be leaned on.
• The peg is set “into a firm place,” not loose soil. God chooses the setting and makes it solid.
• Psalm 40:2: “He set my feet upon a rock and established my steps.”
• Isaiah 33:6 promises “He will be the stability of your times,” showing that divine placement brings enduring strength.
• Beyond stability, Eliakim becomes a seat of honor—“a throne of glory.” The phrase speaks of authority exercised for God’s glory, not personal gain.
• Jeremiah 17:12 calls the sanctuary “a glorious throne,” tying glory to God’s presence.
• Hebrews 1:8 cites Psalm 45:6, applying “Your throne, O God, endures forever” to Christ, foreshadowed in Eliakim’s role (Revelation 3:7).
• The blessing extends to Eliakim’s whole family line and, by extension, Judah itself. Leadership rooted in faithfulness elevates everyone under its cover.
• 2 Samuel 7:12-16 shows the Davidic covenant blessing David’s “house.” Eliakim’s appointment echoes that pattern—God secures a household through a faithful son.
• Isaiah 9:6-7 connects the growth of government and peace to the “throne of David,” hinting that this verse also points ahead to the Messiah who blesses His Father’s house forever.
God Himself promises to hammer Eliakim securely into leadership, making him a dependable support whose steady, God-glorifying authority will bless his entire family line. The verse affirms that when the LORD installs someone, He gives both stability and honor, anticipating the ultimate, unshakable rule of Christ.
(23) I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place . . .—The word for “nail” is used both for the peg that fastens a tent to the ground, as in the “stakes” of Isaiah 33:20; Isaiah 54:2; Judges 4:21, or, as in Ezekiel 15:3, for a nail driven into the wall. Here the context shows that the latter meaning is preferable. It was, as the sequel shows, a symbol of the support upon which others can depend. (Comp. the “nail in his holy place” of Ezra 9:8.)He shall be for a glorious throne . . .—Another symbol of sovereignty follows. The form, throne of glory, is found in its highest application in ...
Verse 23. - I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place (comp. Ezra 9:8; Zechariah 10:4). The idea intended to be expressed is firmness and fixity of tenure. He shall be for a glorious throne to his father's house (compare the next verse). All his relations, even the most remote, shall derive honor from him, and bask in the sunshine of his prosperity. So shall all members of the family of God, made sons of God by adoption in Christ, participate in the final glory of Christ in his eternal kingdom.Isaiah 22:23 NIV
