Solutions for Software-
Defined Vehicles
Develop in the cloud, deploy over the air, and run and manage software at the vehicle edge.
The Future Is Software Defined
Automotive OEMs and consumers today are increasingly looking for features defined by software, such as driver assistance, infotainment, and intelligent connectivity. And these features themselves require ever more software. Driver assistance evolves into autonomous driving; infotainment requires richer digital content; connected vehicles need software to process and manage all the data they transmit. Furthermore, consumers expect cars to continuously upgrade long after leaving the production line.
Robust edge software coupled with a purpose-built, cloud-native DevOps environment ensures high-quality outcomes. This is how we do it.
CI/CD with Automation
Agile methodologies drive continuous software development and deployment beyond "model years" — including after the vehicle has left the factory. Wind River® Studio provides an end-to-end software platform that enables customers to develop in the cloud, deploy over the air, and run and manage software at the vehicle edge.
Faster time-to-market needs automated development workflows. Additionally, to ensure safety, simulation and testing must be thorough too. Wind River Studio Virtual Lab and Wind River Studio Test Automation connect hardware to the cloud and automate all levels of testing, from unit tests to system tests that include hardware.
Consolidation and Virtualization
Automotive development is shifting from hundreds of loosely connected single-function electronic control units (ECUs) to complex integrated software on a few highly connected, high-performance domain and zone controllers (HPCs).
VxWorks®, Wind River Linux, and Wind River HelixTM Virtualization Platform facilitate this transition. Helix Platform delivers a safety-certifiable multi-core virtualization platform that supports mixed-criticality systems, so automakers can safely deploy ADAS applications on the VxWorks RTOS while running infotainment applications on Wind River Linux, Android, or other operating systems. And they can run all these applications on the same HPC hardware without compromising performance, safety, or security.
Connectivity
As vehicles process data from various sensors and interact with a broad ecosystem that includes other vehicles on the road, manufacturers will have to develop data analytics systems capable of handling this vast data flow and processing it in near real time.
Wind River Studio Digital Feedback Loop enables real-time analytics and insights from OS-level and application-specific telemetry and edge device data. Automakers can incorporate these insights into the development flow, create updates and fixes quickly, and download to the vehicle via Wind River Studio Over-the-Air Updates.
Modularization and Extensibility
On the edge, VxWorks and Wind River Linux provide support for OCI-compliant containers to enable software modularization, micro-services, and ease of OTA updates at lower cost due to smaller OTA footprint. Being OCI-compliant means that industry-proven solutions can be used to deploy software reliably at cloud scale.
Modularization and extensibility are useful in the DevOps environment as well. You can bring your custom development tools into the Studio environment via Wind River Studio Gallery, an ecosystem of third-party and custom tools and software that can extend Studio capabilities and help integrate Studio into existing workflows.
Safety, Security, and Certification
For software-defined vehicles, safety and security are foundational. Wind River has a decades-long legacy of security, safety, and reliability for mission-critical systems in industries ranging from aerospace and defense to automotive to medical and industrial. Wind River is a leading supplier of RTOSes and hypervisors to the aerospace and defense industry, where certifications are even more stringent than automotive certifications.
Wind River safety and certification details, including ISO 26262 ASIL-D certifications, can be found here. Additionally, our development processes and tools are highly secure, with with role-based access control (RBAC), two-factor authentication, and more.
