Screenlets (Desktop Widgets) Fixed For Ubuntu 16.04, Available In PPA

| Date: February 06, 2017 | View Comments | Tags: customization, eye candy, linux, screenlets, ubuntu, widgets

Screenlets, a widget framework for Linux, was updated to work with Ubuntu 16.04 recently, and new packages are available in its official PPA.

The Screenlets package was removed from the official Ubuntu 16.04 (and newer) repositories because it no longer worked, however, Hrotkó Gábor fixed various issues that prevented the application and some of its widgets from working, and uploaded a new version to the official Screenlets PPA, for Ubuntu 16.04.

While the PPA doesn't officially support it, you can also use it in Ubuntu 16.10.

How To Use Your Own Weather Services API Key With `My Weather Indicator`

My Weather Indicator on top panel + widget

`My Weather Indicator` is an Ubuntu AppIndicator which displays the current weather in the top panel. The application comes with many features, including weather forecast, a cool forecast map and even desktop widgets.

Because of API limitations, Wunderground and World Weather Online didn't work properly in My Weather Indicator lately, so a new version has been released recently which allows users to enter their own API keys for these services in the My Weather Indicator preferences.

You can continue to use Open Weather Map and Yahoo weather services, which don't require you to enter an API key, so this isn't something required to get My Weather Indicator to work, it's just if you want to use Wunderground or World Weather Online services.

Screenlets 0.1.4 was released a couple of days ago, bringing fixes and improvements for Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal (Unity) such as AppIndicator support, fixed flicker and resize grip issues in Natty and more.

Also, Screenlets now has its own PPA (there's also a development PPA here) so it's easy to install the latest version in Ubuntu.

Integrating Facebook Share Button Into Blogger Blogs

| Date: October 28, 2009 | View Comments | Tags: blogger, blogging, facebook, share, social media, widgets

Facebook recently updated it's Share Button, which now includes a share count and analytics. The button is fairly easy to integrate, as long as you don't specify the base URL (meaning that it will not work for the main page of a blog - it will only submit the blog URL, not a post URL), or you manually enter the URL.

Configuring the Facebook Share button for Blogger blogs is a bit tricky but achievable. Read on.

The first thing you need to do is decide over what format you want to use for the button. You can find info on this, on the Facebook Wiki. After you decide on this, remember the 'type=', as that will define the type of Facebook share button.

Then, to implement the button into your Blogger template, go to Layout > Edit HTML and use the following code for inserting the button (of course, in the template you need to go to where you want the Facebook Share button to show up):

Allow Your Readers to Post and Vote Suggestions for Your Blog Using Skribit Widget

| Date: June 12, 2009 | View Comments | Tags: blogging, skribit, suggestions, webmaster, widgets

Skribit widget can be embedded easily into any blog and allows your readers to post and vote post suggestions. There is a limit to 5 suggestions for the free version of the widget though, but that should be enough. A nice feature is that the users must not have a Skribit account to be able to suggest/vote (unless other specified by you).

Skribit widget comes in two flavors: one which can be directly embedded into your blog (see the image at the beginning of the post), and another one which is just a suggest button which, if clicked, opens up a window (using jQuery I believe) where the user is able to vote or post suggestions (see image below).

Both widgets can be easily customized once you register your free account and for even more customization, you get a list of the CSS elements in the widgets (for advanced users).

Run Mac OSX Widgets on Your Windows Desktop with Kludgets

| Date: May 11, 2009 | View Comments | Tags: Kludgets, macosx, software, widgets, windows

photobucket Kludgets is an open source project built on Webkit and Nokia's QT framework that lets you run OsX widgets on your Windows desktop. On the author's site you'll find four basic widgets to get you started and there are plenty of places to find more on the net - like WidgetWorld.

The first Kludgets beta was just released last week, so bear in mind that not all widgets are going to work and you may encounter some stability issues.

If you're a Mac user stuck using a PC at work and are jonesing for your widgets, Kludgets is a simple way to access them.
