Nautilus Flickr Uploader [Linux]

| Date: March 10, 2010 | View Comments | Tags: fedora, flickr, internet, linux, nautilus, ubuntu, web

Nautilus Flickr Uploader is a simple GUI for uploading pictures to your Flickr account using the Nautilus file browser. This is a simple task but something which two well known (well, more or less) Linux photo managers fail to do (see gThumb or Shotwell - but they have PicasaWeb support in the latest dev builds).

Flickr Adds People Tagging

| Date: October 22, 2009 | View Comments | Tags: flickr, internet, people tagging, photos, web

If you use Facebook, you’re surely familiar with the option to tag the people in your photos. The feature both identifies them to viewers of the picture and lets them know a photo that includes them has been posted on the site.

Today, Flickr added a people tagging option as well:

We’ve launched People in Photos, a new feature that will help put a face to the Flickrverse and enable you to highlight members that you’ve photographed in a whole new way. People in Photos lets you add a member to a photo, find photos of people you know, and manage which photos you’re in. Huzzah!

Wally: Best Automatic Wallpaper Changer Application I've Seen [Windows, Linux, Mac OSX]

| Date: September 09, 2009 | View Comments | Tags: flickr, linux, macosx, photobucket, picasa, software, wallpaper, wallpaper rotator, windows

We wrote about different automatic wallpaper changer applications either for Windows, Linux and / or Mac OSX but Wally is special. Wally is a Qt4 wallpaper changer, using multiple sources like files, folders, FTP remote folders, Flickr, Yahoo!, Panoramio, Pikeo, Ipernity, Photobucket, Buzznet, Picasa and Smugmug images. Not only that, but it also works on Windows, Linux and Mac OSX. Ubuntu users will be glad to know that it even comes with pre-build .deb packages for both 32 and 64bit versions (download link at the end of the post).

Wally features:

· History support
· Many wallpaper layouts available on all platforms
· EXIF data available over picture and in system tray tooltip
· Save downloaded photos
· Run-time folder change detection in "Folder" mode
· Proxy support
· It supports KDE3, KDE4, Gnome, XFCE4, Fluxbox, Blackbox, FVWM (unstable), WindowMaker window managers.

I must say, this seems the best wallpaper changer application I used. After running Wally (I only tested it in Ubuntu Linux so far), it sits in your notification area and you can access it's settings via right-click:

wally systray menu

From it's settings you can choose to "Switch background on play" and then just click "Play" on it's notification area icon (Systray for Windows) or Next / Previous photo if you don't like your current wallpaper. Obviously, this can be done automatically without any input from your side, by entering a desired interval to switch wallpapers.

Other interesting features include the option to select the position of the photos, border, only use landscape oriented photos and add the photo info to the wallpaper.

The latest version of Gwibber, 2.0 prototype, is only available in the Gwibber daily PPA. To install it in Ubuntu, open a terminal and run the following commands:

You can replace "jaunty" with your Ubuntu version.

Then add the GPG key:
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 72D340A3

And finally, you can install Gwibber:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gwibber

If you have an older version of Gwibber installed, instead of the above command, run:

BloggyBits is a handy tool to easily create a widget with your stream from Twitter, Flickr, Delicious, Digg, StumbleUpon, RSS feeds.

Just choose some or all services and customize them with your user name, enter the title, generate and download the code to insert into a web page (see the live example above).

The social widget works in Flash and within the code you can change the size but not the colors.

BloggyBits is a free service that does not require registration. If you leave your email, however, you will receive a URL to make some changes.

Organize Your Flickr Photos Offline in Gnome with Desktop Flickr Organizer [Linux]

| Date: May 19, 2009 | View Comments | Tags: flickr, gnome, linux, software

If you’re wondering how to organize your Flickr sets offline as well as your tags and comments, there is a way! Download and install Desktop Flickr Organizer. It helps you do the following:
  • Upload images - you could already edit its attributes: description, title, tags, privacy, sets, etc.
  • Manage your sets. You could even add new ones. This is one thing I can’t seem to do with Postr. With just a few drag and drop choices and synchronization you could easily update your sets. Sounds great doesn’t it?
  • Edit tags, titles, descriptions, privacy settings and licenses. If you uploaded everything already and forgot the stories behind the pictures, you could add them later.

It’s got more functionality than Postr because you could sync the changes you made after you edited the properties/attributes of the ones you already uploaded. All from your desktop. You don’t have to open a web browser to do all of that.

I’ve always wanted to do this without going to Flickr.com and using the organizing tool there. It’s now easier to do things from DFO.
