Pe·dro I

(pā′drō, pĕ′dro͝o) 1798-1834.
Portuguese-born Brazilian political leader who declared Brazil's independence from Portugal in 1822. He served as Brazil's first emperor from 1822 until 1831, when he abdicated. He also served briefly as King Pedro IV of Portugal (1826).
