The idea of "basic structure". Social justice concerns more than the distribution of resources or benefits and burdens. It also concerns the organizing of the division of labor, how ruling norms can privilege and disadvantage, the form and structure of decision making power, and other issues. The next three days will discuss some of these issues in more detail.

The occupational structure in most societies in the world today traps many people in lower paying unskilled occupations. Some people would suggest that such a hierarchical job structure is not unjust as long as there is equal opportunity for class mobility. I will disagree. A division between "mental" and "manual" labor is itself unjust. Workplace democracy would alleviate but not eliminate such injustice.

What some writers refer to as issues of justice concerning recognition are best understood as matters of how dominant norms function to exclude, stigmatize or otherwise disadvantage some categories of people. I will focus on institutional racism, heterosexism and exclusion of people with disabilities from full participation in social and economic life.
