DUTCH SHIPPING
Unions Lilt Ban
ON AUSTRALIAN TRADE WITH
INDONESIA
Sydney, Dec. 1. — A conference
of 17 trade unions to-day lifted a
black ban on Dutch shipping be
tween Australia and Indonesia,
which has tied up trade for the
past four years. Waterfront unions
imposed the ban in September,
1945, to cut off supplies from
Dutch troops who were fighting
native Indonesian Republican
forces.
To-day the decision to lift the
uaui woo J.J.U&UUC Uxl uiic iuv/uxw.1.1. ux
the general secretary of the
Waterside Dockers' Federation,
Mr. J. J. Healy, who was one of
its instigators four years ago. To
day's conference was called by the
Australian Council of Trade
Unions, at the request of the
Waterside Workers' Federation.
Last week the Federal council of
the Federation recommended that
the ban be lifted because of the
agreement reached between Hol
land and, the Indonesian Repub
lican Government.
Mr. Healy, in his motion to-day,
said that the ban had been to
assist the Indonesian people in
their struggle for freedom from
continued exploitation by the
Dutch Imperialists. It had helped
the Indonesians in this struggle.
When the ban was first .imposed
it applied only to goods which
could be use! by the Dutch in
their campaign against the Indo
nesians, but it was later extended
to cover all goods from Australia
to the Netherlands East Indies.
The ban was lifted from May to
December last year, but the water
side workers re-imposed it, claim
ing that the Netherlands Govern
ment had broken an agreement
with the Indonesians.
Regaining Markets
Representatives of the Royal
Inter-Ocean Line, the Blue Funnel
Line and Burns, Philp and Co.,
said to-night that 11 ships would
be placed on the AustraliaIndo
nesia run.
A leading Dutch business man,
Mr. A. van Bonchove, said to-day
that Australia seemed to have a
good chance of recapturing most
of the trade ihe had lost through
the ban. Mr. van Bonchove is
chairman of the AustraliaIndo
nesia Conference and general
manager of the Royal Inter
Ocean Line. Australia would not
know whether it had lost formea:
markets through the ban until it
began seeking them again, he said.
The shipping companies which
had operated services between
Australia and Indonesia before
the ban would now recommence
them. It was expected that Aus
tralia's chief export would be
flour, with a lesser trade in- other
foodstuffs and general cargo. In
return Indonesia would send main
ly tea and kapok.
Should Boost Exports
The Federal secretary of the.
Australian Exporters' Federation,
Mr. A. R. Birch, said to-night that
the lifting of the ban should boost
Australian exports by 5,000,000ドル
annually within a few years. It
would take time to build up the
trade because two other countries
had established their goods in In
donesia during the past 18 months
while the ban had prevented goods
from leaving' Australia.
Before the war Australian ex
ports to Indonesia had increased
from about 1,373,000ドル in 1938-39 to
just over 3,000,000ドル in 1940-41, Mr.
Birch said. The Netherlands East
Indies authorities had increased
their purchases of drugs, textiles,
medicines, metal and metal goods
during that period. Although de
liveries ceased after 1941, there
was an N.E.I, buying mission in
Australia that was prepared to
spend 60,000,000ドル on capital and
consumer goods for the rehabilita
tion $ of Indonesia after the war,
Mr. ' Birch said they actually
bought 10,000,000ドル worth and
shipped some before the shipping
ban was applied in September,
1945. While the ban was lifted
for a few months 'between May
and December last year, about
1,500,000ドル worth of goods was
shipped, but about another 10,ドル
000,000 worth had to stay in Aus
tralia. That is a fair indication
of Indonesia's value as a market.
