Fri 27 Jul 1951 - The Narrogin Observer (WA : 1918 - 1955)
Page 1 - Death of Sir James Mitchell
?
Word was received on Thursday
to the effect that Sir James
Mitchell had passed away in his
sleep, thus terminating a long
career during which the deceased
had occupied every position of
responsibility and dignity that
this State was in a position to
accord a native born resident.
As a member of the State Parliament,
he rose to ministerial
dignity and afterwards became
Premier. During the whole period
of his Parliamentary service,
he showed considerable aptitude
in the performance of his varied
duties, coupled with a broad understanding
of problems relating
to land settlement, which enabled
many decisions to be. made
with marked benefit; to the State.
It could not be said that he
possessed oratorial ability, but
what he lacked in this regard,
was overcome by patent sincerity
of purpose and practical
knowledge of whatever objective
he applied his energies to accomplish.
It is not too much to say, that
as a Parliamentarian he stood up
more prominently than any other
representative with the exception
of the late Lord Forrest with
whom he is to be bracketted as
possessing similar characteristics
and the same deep consciousness
of duty. Both, singularly
enough, were born in Bunbury.
Following his long political
career, he was appointed Lieut.-
Governor, holding this position
with such distinction that he
subsequently became Governor.
In that exalted position, Sir
James lost none of his approachable
characteristics nor the common
touch which had endeared
him during his long life to a
legion of friends who were represented
in every sphere of public?
and private life. He was in every
sense a "good mixer" and just
as ready to sit down by the wayside'
to enjoy a cup of tea with
workers, as to dine in company
with more representative citizens
at State functions. He un-
doubtedly epitomised the full
qualities of a citizen and the
characteristics of a gentleman.
Covering all this was a deep
sense of rectitude and responsibility
whieb. fouB4 expression in
his every action, thus justifying
the universal approbation and
affection which accompanied him
through his honorable and long
career.
It would be merely trite to conclude
by saying that he will be
missed. Men like the late Sir
James Mitchell are not born
every day and but seldom, and
when they pass away, it naturally
occasions a pang in the hearts
of all who knew them. This, however,
is tempered by the knowledge
of their earthly accomplishments
which remain to strengthen
conviction that they are still
spiritually with us. And so it
may be said of the earthly career
of the late Sir James. It remains
with its multitude of object lessons,
each standing out along
the beaten track of his life as a
guide and example for others to
follow.
