I think it was the CB operators that first discovered (and ignored)
the fact that compression in the audio domain increases the distortion
as much as the compression, good rigs compress in the RF domain or
digitally making all distortion inaudible.
I have noticed that most HAM net control operators that began as CB
operators will tell everybody not to use speech compression, but when I
had mine turned up very high (on my FT-990) they never complained.
(the FT-990 uses RF speech compression)
