Dennis,
I did exactly that this past weekend. I have a MKIIG I bought new last May 2002
and have been using on 6 meters in my shack. This month it decided to start
failing, loosing output power after some use. Yes, the power supply, antenna
and transmission line are all in good working order so I'm sending the MKIIG
back for warranty repair. This is my 4th 706 and I can tell you without a doubt
the receiver in the FT-847 hears ALOT better than the 706's ever did! The 847
has more front panel controls (probably because it has more front panel!) which
reduces the need to access a menu unlike the 706's. I like the scan capability
alot better too-- if you are scanning channels or in VFO on a 706 and bump the
tunng knob scanning would stop. Not so on the 847- turn the knob CW while
scanning and it scans UP, turn the knob CCW while scanning and it scans DOWN. I
scan frequently and prefer the 847. The 847's had and have their share of
problems but so does the 706 in my opinion. I am happy with the change as are
many of my ham friends already using 847's. I think you will be happier with
the Yaesu also.
