[Logic] PCI serial card

Steve,
I would suggest going to the Lava site and making sure your motherboard is
compatible with the Lava card you think you might use. I run an AMD Athlon
and my chipset isn't supported for ANY of the Lava cards. Good thing I
checked before putting out the bucks. I was looking at the 4-port and the
8-port card before discovering the incompatibility problem. If yours is
supported, and you think you might buy one, get the board with the newer
uart, its the more expensive one. If you need the model numbers I can
probably dig them up again.
Ultimately I went with USB-RS232 converter cables. They are all not the
same either. I would query the group here and find someone that has the rig
your planning to interface to, then get the same cable they have. I
"quickly" bought a converter cable from a local computer store, it worked
like a champ with the FT1000MP, but generated more noise than a blender on
VHF, it was really bad. I bought a much better designed and manufactured
cable (quiet as a church mouse), it didn't work with the FT1000MP, but works
with the TNC, RIgblaster, etc, etc. So I just use the com port for the
FT1000 and the USB converter(s) for everything else. I prefer USB for these
serial devices, its fast and you don't have any IRQ problems. Others
may/will disagree, its really to each his own. If you go with a com card
other then the Lava, make sure it supports IRQ sharing.
Good Luck,
73, de Brad N8GLS
