[Logic] Power: On or Off ?

In the last day, I have come onto two folks, each
of whom know more about computers, etc. than
I ever will. Each says, "Leave ALL your solid
state electronics on 24/7, and never ever turn off
your computer monitor." I was told that at UCLA, one
will receive a "reprimand" if a monitor is turned off
over night! Said to shorten the unit's life.
So do you folks leave your rigs/computers powered
ON all the time. I presume you do use the "power
saving" timers built into computer operating systems;
those programs, which after some defined time,
shut down the monitor and disk drives. Evidently
that IS a good idea.
However, the S meter in my radio has an incandescent
bulb actually built inside the S meter unit! When the
bulb filament burns out, the entire S meter unit must
be replaced; this happened already to one of my
friends who always left his gear powered ON. Now he
always turns that particular piece off at the end of the
day, hi.
BTW, my present "shack" computer is 3 1/2 years old,
400 MHz chip, and it has been on and off every day
since new as are my various rig elements which are powered
by AC.
