[Kenwood] TL-922A Plate current

I recently purchased a 922 to go with my 570. I hooked it up for the first
time yesterday.
According to the manual it should show 100ma on CW and 200ma on the plate
current in the operate position. I never saw the needle move off of zero
when swithing between standby and operate..
 Should you see any plate current if the 570 is not connected to the 922? In
other words, does the 570 have to be connected via the 7-pin remote before
you see any plate current?
And does menu 39 on the 570 have anything to do with the plate current or is
it just a relay?
I ordered the remote 7 pin cable from Kenwood and the only leads it has are
pin 4 (relay) and pin 6 (ALC).
