[Dxbase] 64 bit windows problems (and Win7 anyway)

I resisted the change to Win7 for the longest time for that reason but the
XP load was becoming increasingly unstable as the months wore on and I had
to decide whether to re-load XP clean or go with Seven. I went with 7 and
for the most part I'm very happy with my decision to do so. It's a far nicer
OS and the benefits clearly outweigh the few downsides. The DX Base install
was the part of the conversion I was fearing most but ironically it was the
easiest. Just don't try to install it to the Program Files folder, edit the
Hosts file using Notepad run as Administrator to edit your cluster list and
get the patches necessary to access the older help file and all is good. I
did likewise for my other two critical ham apps (N1MM Contest Logger and
VE7CC's AR User). I did not have to select compatibility mode either. It
runs just nicely in installed as administrator to a non-"program files"
directory.
I've also saved myself a lot of worry by installing my .mdb log file to
Dropbox so there's no longer a worry about the risk of losing my log should
I suffer a drive failure.

So, now I know why I dumped Win 7 off my amateur radio computer and
re-installed XP. The nice thing is, I have not had any issues with XP and
DXBase (or any other amateur radio related programs either).
My "two cents worth" is to keep using XP until all the programs one wants to
use are Win 7 compatible without any major installation/programming changes
needed by me.

So, there are a number of issues with Vista and Win7.
First, if you are using Win7, either 32 or 64 bit, I'd advise browsing to
the DXBase exe file, choosing 'properties' on the right-click menu, and
putting it into 'XP compatibility mode'. This is likely to help.
Keep in mind that neither Vista nor Win7 want you to write into the Program
Files dir, or any subdir of it. DXBase 2007 is old enough that it keeps its
ini file and databases in its dir in Program Files. So there are a world of
issues that await you! So much easier if you were able to keep it on
WinXP...
Microsoft has published any number of Knowledgebase articles about this.
It's all related to their 'UAC' (User Account Control) concept, which means
you aren't 'administrator' anymore, even if you are.
Try searching for 'Inside Windows Vista User Account Control', by Mark
Russinovich, for a discussion of what has changed from XP.
