[Dxbase] UTC Thread

Merle,
I was a very loyal and longtime user of DXbase but switched to the DXLab
Suite several months ago. You'll find several former DXbase reflector
members on the DXLab reflector, so I'm not the only one.
My driving force was the need for a logging program that polled my Yaesu
FT-2000D so my SteppIR would track the radio, automatically retuning the
antenna. I didn't want to give up DXbase sophistication and integration. I
gave no weight to the fact that a program is free, as price is minor
consider how much we use the programs and how important they are to us.
The support is phenomenal. My assumption is the author, who won the 2008
ARRL Technical Innovation Award for the program, is in a position to be able
to devote full time to the program and, yet, give it away for free. That
combination is stiff competition for any software developer; actually I
can't fathom how anyone could compete for the same type of program.
I looked at several programs before making the switch. Logger32 seems very
good and is popular. It was the only other contender. Others are simpler;
there's a steep learning curve, but I've been told the same about DXbase.
I am always way behind on QSLing, and I haven't used DXLab for that yet. It
has lots of features that DXbase doesn't have (yet). I made a list of them,
but my list might not be your priority list.
The one thing I don't have in DXLab is automatic lookup of managers with the
GOLIST on my hard drive. It's not perfect; some screens have fields I'd
like to eliminate, but the program is very configurable.
I'm still on the DXbase reflector because of the 15 or so years I used the
program, and I want to know if Jack is coming out with something new.
(BTW, I can't remember what I sold you, but I hope it's working OK!)

It seems to me that this thread is about the difference between
some people being able to make DXBase run well on VISTA, and maybe Windows
7,
and having a logging database that is fully supported on the new operating
systems.
It appears that DXBase may not be upgraded for support of the VISTA and
WINDOWS 7
64 bit operating systems. I need to move to a new, more capable computer, to
handle my
growing list of ham related applications. So, I need to find a new logging
program that
has most of the capabilities of DXBase. I would be very interested in
comments from others
that have fully - or partially - switched to another logging program that
they think compares well
to DXBase.
Thanks & 73,
Merle - W0EWM

I fail to see what this Thread is all about as I have a Vista computer set
to EST and my dxbase log records in UTC automatically. I never considered it
to be a big deal.
