Yes indeed Doug it will be interesting to see the spin on this one.
As far as ARRL being financially involved, they were financially involved
the instant they took the check for those ads. Back in 2012 they also
published a glowing review:
http://www.remotehamradio.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/RHR-ARRL-REVIEW.pdf
(Note the prices now are significantly less than mentioned in the review and
evidently you don't even need the radio now either).
Think about it: any ham with an internet connection and enough cash to rent
those COMMERCIAL stations flooding the DXCC list with fees & award money. I
don't know how long it would take at 49 cents a minute for the
rent-a-station but I'd think DXCC Honor Roll would be much cheaper to obtain
that way than buying a radio and putting up your own tower(s) and antennas.
It would be a poor BUSINESS plan if it were not so.
If I were an equipment or antenna manufacturer I'd be jerking my ads out of
QST so fast it would make your head spin. Who's going to actually purchase
equipment when it's prefectly acceptable to rent world class stations? I
know I've lost all interest in spending another dime on actual hardware when
I can rent it for pennies on the dollar. I can remember paying 50 cents a
minute for a cell phone call and that was in 1990 dollars. This thing is a
bargain.
Incentive licensing was one thing, but this is the monetization of amateur
radio we're seeing.

Joe W4WN
