[Dx-qsl] Is this a trend?

Not sure but I think we started this with BS7H 2007. Here's the logic. I know that folks have 'fine tuned' this in the last few years, but I believe this is still more or less what is happening, and perhaps answers some of your questions.
With BS7H, we uploaded as soon as we could, after the operation, the log entries of the folks that donated to the operation. I'm sure we missed a few, but thats what we tried to do. Then, if the person uploaded their log, and it matched, they had BS7H confirmed. Of course, if they wanted a paper QSL, their SASE was answered. The logic here is to thank those that donated ahead of a very expensive DXpedition.
As the QSLs came in, I answered them as quickly as I can, and then every few weeks, I'd upload the logs of what I answered to LOTW. This allowed those that had requested QSLs to avoid sending them in if they wanted DXCC credit, etc.
After a period of time, and to be honest, I forget when I did this), we uploaded the COMPLETE log to LOTW. Thus, anyone that worked them, regardless of whether they sent a QSL or not, could obtain a confirmation if they matched the LOTW log.
I can tell you that folks that contributed via the major organisations such as you note were also uploaded very early on in the process as well.

I couldn't help but notice from the Midway KH4 Web Site:

contributed 50ドル to K5D - what have I got so far some months AFTER
the expedition - NIL, NADA, ZILTCH, NOTHING. NO card and NO
lotw. What level of confidence does this give me for KH4 - not a lot.
