David, in the situation you describe, that 6-7 feet of wire is going to be
as much of your antenna as the "antenna" is. That is, it will radiate, and
probably radiate more than the "antenna." Because it is probably near the
metal body of your vehicle, it will waste a lot of power heating up that
metal.
You can either move the antenna to where the tuner is or move the tuner to
where the antenna is. There is a complicated third approach to doing part of
the tuning at the base of the antenna with another tuner and then running
coax from that point to the AH-4. While that can be made to work, I would
not recommend it at all since you loose most of the advantage of having a
remote tuner.
I fear that if you must use that long a wire from the tuner to the antenna,
that you are going to have a very inefficient system. The tuner is designed
to be mounted as closely as possible to the base of the antenna. I would
think that any connecting wire longer than about a foot would be inviting
problems.
