[Antennas] vertical noise

My experience also confirms Bob's.
I have a 40M EDZ aimed at Europe and a 40M vertical with four elevated
radials. I was quite surprised when I compared the two into Europe:
The EDZ was consistently 1-2 S-units louder. My observations were
confirmed when I compared the models for each: The EZNEC model showed
the EDZ had 10 dB again over the vertical in its favored directions. On
the other hand, when working long haul DX (ZL from Virginia), the EDZ
and vertical were about equal despite the fact that this direction was
also a favored direction for the EDZ. I presume that the lower take-off
angle for the vertical allowed the signal to arrive with fewer hops and
consequent lower loss on this longer path, so that the signal strengths
were now about equal.
My QTH is quite quiet electrically. Typically, the only source of
electrical noise is my own house. The vertical is always much noisier
than the EDZ. (I have never actually looked at the S-meter when doing
this check.)
