Sean,
Experience here is as follows. Using an FT 840, B&W VS300A tuner and 185 ft
Random wire at 70 ft vs. an FT 100D, MFJ 969 tuner, and a G5RV Apex at 40ft
The Random wire tunes 160 mtrs FB and the G5RV won't (atleast not well). On
80/75/40 mtrs the random is 2 s unit better then the G5RV on TX and RX both,
so assuming the rule of thumb that 6 db is equal to 1 S unit, it is 12 db
over the dipole. On 20 mtrs the G5RV is equal to or in some cases better
then the random wire. The last band I have bothered to try them out on is 17
mtrs and the random will not tune there, so the G5RV is the better antenna by
far :). I put the random up only for 160 mtrs so I could experiment with PSK
and other digital modes on 160 but after playing with it on 30-80 mtrs I
decided to use it full time on the lower HF over my old stand by dipole.
The G5RV was my first dipole I put up and has served me well but the random
has proven itself to me anyway.
take care, 73
