Rick,
Sometimes when I'm in a hurry, and have no end insulator in my
pocket, I just make a loop at the end of the rope I'm using and
do the same with the wire and there you go!
In the roof, with low power, I would think that you could tie the wire
directly
to the wood rafters if they happen to be in the right place.
