Thanks to everyone for your opinions. Right now it is on the back burner
again as Finals are next week.
Here is what you nice flks said about the situation just for review.
73 and Happy Holidays to All!!
"Listening only? If so, the more wire, the better
almost without limit."
"I believe that a center fed doublet is very hard to beat after
trying combinations of loops, delta loops, inverted
vees, end fed wires, true windom antennas etc. "
"Might be tight for a 40 Meter loop, however, you didn't mention attic
height
(floor to peak). Try any configuration you can, including "drooping dipole
ends." Forget resonant formula & use open wire line.
Open wire provides better matching over wide frequency range. SWR isn't
King, but doubt antenna will meet <2.5:1 over needed frequency range. I
doubted open wire until using it on a "random loop" that covered 160-10.
An antenna, grounded or not is a radiator. Major upside: DC/Lightning
protection. Downside for vertical: Ground plane/counterpoise & radials. See
"Reflections" by Maxwell, "Antennas" by Kraus.
You are absoultley right--Use what you have. Any antenna is better than no
antenna!"
"Dipoles are probably the best choice for attics."
"Unless your attic is tough to get around in, take advantage of the
opportunity
to try everything you can. What better way to spend the cold winter days
than
string wire -- indoors!!"
"I had a similar attic and used a W9INN trap antenna, they work
great and you can cover most bands."
"Have you considered put up a multi-leg dipole arrangement?"
