Google Chrome Will Have Extensions by May

Nicholas Moline noticed an interesting session from Google I/O, a developer conference that will be held in May.

"Learn how Google Chrome makes it easy to write extensions using the web technologies you already know. This talk will cover the basics of the extension system (distribution/packaging, installation, updates), as well as the different APIs to enhance with the browser."

We can assume that Google Chrome will add support for extensions before May 27th, when the conference starts.

A recently published document explains the process model for extensions. The latest developer versions of Google Chrome already supports user scripts, which could later become part of more complex extensions.

"Chromium extensions will follow a multi-process architecture to share the same kind of stability and security that regular web pages have in Chromium. All of an extension's code runs in a single process, separate from the browser (with the exception of user scripts which run in whichever renderers they apply to). Extension code can communicate with user scripts, and vice versa, through a message passing API."

There's also a list of APIs that includes support for changing the theme, customizing toolstrips and buttons, manipulating the download system, interacting with the history and bookmark system, adding support for sidebars and status bars.

  8. No, Chrome doesn't support feed detection and feed preview, two basic features available in any other modern browser, but there are plans to address this issue.

    Chrome does not have feed detection! Seriously, it must be the only browser on earth (I have 11 browsers installed and all of them support RSS)!

    What was Google thinking???

    This is really the only reason that's keeping me away from Chrome. And no, I don't want to use Google Reader, I find browser-enabled RSS feeds faster.

  10. I might give Chrome another spin once extensions are supporter. I use IE8 RC1 as my main browser, but would like to have a second/backup browser and Firefox, while being the best alternative to IE (hmm... I wonder if Chrome will take that spot?), Firefox doesn't play nice with my machine (and no, it's not my machine -- it's Firefox).

  11. Wow - so much fear of extensions slowing down Chrome - you know, just because they exist, doesn't mean you HAVE to install them.

    Plus, where's the Mac version? Please hurry! Firefox is crashing left and right and sucking an obscene amount of my system resources.

  12. What I want is a Linux version, I don't mind about extensions, the only one I use is Adblock Plus, and on Chrome I use the script provided by Adsweep...

  16. firstly I wonder it will work better & smoother than FF. after launching chrome.. I realize it is what i looking for.. still a more way to go.. Hope the extensions doesn't make the browser slow..

  19. That image is licensed CC-BY-NC-ND 2.0, and since you're running ads on this site, this use doesn't qualify as non-commercial--so you're in violation of the license.

  20. I don't think I violate the non-commercial license just by showing ads next to a post illustrated by the image. Read this post for a possible explanation.

    "Is it allowed to show e.g. a CC-licensed photo on a webpage which also includes ads to the side if the image uses the “non-commercial” clause? (...) I’ve asked the Wikipedia mailing list a while ago, and recently received another confirmation from Creative Commons’ Lawrence Lessig: yes, the CC organization believes this being OK is the best reading of the license."

  21. I just love Chrome. I have been doing most all my browsing on it since installing it. It’s built-in support for Gears is also nice. And, app shortcuts are very appealing (as it takes 3 clicks to make one) and Chrome remembers the size of the window that you had set for each shortcut you create. So I have been able to create shortcuts for Gmail, Google Docs, etc. (it feels as if I am launching Outlook or Office).

  22. I love the Google suite of products but something I noticed that is small yet annoying. Google chrome is my default browser but when I click on a link in Google earth it opens in IE?!?!??!?! the most screwed up browser. I wouldnt mind that much if it did open in Firefox

  26. Really glad about the extensions, but NB I left FF because of it's sluggishness ( NOT my machine or OS's fault etc ) and the responsiveness of Chrome is IMHO it's best feature ( so far )

  39. On that note it is important to keep in mind that Chrome expression does not only concern the appearance of a browsing but also its function' For example, as browser our appearance as well as our actions are subject to Chromes judgment when they are making a first impression of us!!
