Translation - MA

During this programme, you will:

• Increase your knowledge of translation techniques and strategies across a variety of genres and subject areas.
  
• Gain insight into the complexities of translation, including linguistic nuances, cultural subtleties, and ethical considerations.

• Form a deep understanding of the technical and technological aspects of the translation profession, including the impact of machine translation and AI.

• Develop a working knowledge of some of the latest translation technologies, including Audio-Visual Translation (AVT) software and Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools.

• Enhance project management skills and apply your knowledge to a simulated translation bureau and internship opportunities.

Key Information:

• Delivered on campus

• Complete full-time in one year or part-time over two years

• Modules taught across autumn, spring, and summer semesters

• Submit a dissertation or project or internship report at the end of the summer semester

Autumn Semester

Core modules:

• Theories and Applications in Translation Studies (TR6001) will explore the theory and practice of translation from a variety of linguistic and cultural perspectives, as well as introduce research methods in Translation Studies.

• Translation Technology (TR6011) will introduce you to the latest developments in translation technology, including Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, and explore discussions around the latest developments in Machine Translation and AI.
  
• Translation Practice 1 (TR6021) will help you gain practical experience in tackling real-world translation challenges in your chosen working language pair and acquire linguistic and cultural proficiency in their professional use.
  
• Translation Portfolio (TR6031) will allow you to apply your acquired knowledge to complete a translation project in either your main or your second language pair and write an accompanying analytical translation commentary.

• Contemporary Approaches in Translation Theory and Practice (TR6002) will explore a range of contemporary theories and multimodal practices in the field of translation studies and help you develop skills needed for audio-visual translation (AVT).

• Simulated Translation Bureau (TR6012) will provide you with a hands-on translation experience through a series of simulated scenarios that mimic real-world translation agency situations.

• Translation Practice 2 (TR6022) will provide you with practical experience in tackling real-world translation challenges in your chosen working language pair and build linguistic and cultural proficiency in their professional use.

• Translation Industry Seminar Series (TR6032) will provide wider insights into the field of translation by providing the opportunity to organise and host a series of seminars featuring industry professionals.

• Extended Translation Project (TR6003) will offer you an opportunity to manage and produce an extended translation (ca. 7,000 words), with an accompanying translation process commentary.

• Translation Internship (TR6013) will entail a three-month professional placement, in Ireland or abroad, allowing you to gain real-life industry experience.

• Translation Studies Dissertation (TR6023) will expect you to produce a 15,000-words research project in the field of Translation Studies.

• Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree (NFQ Level 8)) with at least a second-class honours, grade 2 (2:2) in any discipline or an approved equivalent qualification.

• Applicants should have attained language proficiency at a minimum of B2.2 level on the Common European Framework Reference (CEFR) in the main language pair they are registering for.

• The university may shortlist and invite you to an interview.
